Absentee Ballots Available

Absentee ballots are not available for City of Bessemer electors for the May 2, 2017, School Board Bond Proposal Election. Absentee ballots may be obtained at the Bessemer City Clerk's office, 411 S. Sophie St., Bessemer, MI, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you wish to have a ballot mailed to you, please contact the Clerk's office for an application, or mail a completed application to the above address.

The City Clerk's office will be open between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017, the last day for City Electors who wish to receive an Absentee Voter Ballot by mail for the May 2, 2017, School Bond Proposal Election. The last day to vote absentee in the City Clerk's office is Monday, May 1, 2017, beteeen 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Yard Waste Notice

Please be advised that grass clippings, leaves, and all other yard waste should not be placed in either the recycling cart or the garbage card. There is an area at the Gogebic Range Solid Waste Authority, located at 5917 U.S. 2 between Ironwood and Bessemer for this material. Eagle Waste cannot pick up carts with yard waste, etc.

Public Hearing - 2016-2017 Budget

The Common Council of the City of Bessemer will hold a Public Hearing on Monday, May 16, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, City Hall. All citizens are invited to attend and provide the Council with written or oral comments and to ask questions concerning the City's proposed budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year.

The entire budget, General Fund, Downtown Development Authority Fund, Major Street Fund, Local Street Fund, Water Utility Fund, and Sewer Utility Fund, can be inspected by the public from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the City Clerk's Office, City Hall.

Asset-Management Team Volunteers Needed - CLOSED

As part of the Stormwater, Asset Management, and Wastewater (SAW) Grant received, the City of Bessemer is seeking volunteers to serve on the newly created Asset Management Team.

The team will meet semi-annually during the duration of the grant project and be responsible for developing a mission statement and assisting administration in the development of the Level of Service Statement for the City.

Interested parties are asked to submit a letter of interest to the Bessemer City Clerk, 411 S. Sophie St., Bessemer, MI 49911, by March 19, 2016.

Public Hearing - Special Use Permit Application

The Planning Commission for the City of Bessemer will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at 5:15 p.m. CST in the Bessemer City Hall Council Chambers, 411 South Sophie Street, Bessemer, MI 49911, to receive public comment regarding the construction of a new Gogebic County Road Commission facility and application for a special use permit.

Hydrant Flushing Begins August 6

The Bessemer Volunteer Fire Department, in cooperation with the City of Bessemer Department of Public Works, will be flushing hydrants and conducting hydrant flow tests beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6. This will be a system-wide event. Residents may experience discolored water on Thursday evening and Friday. If you experience discoloration, open the tap and let the water run until it becomes clear.

New Time for Council Meetings

Update: Effective January 6, 2015, Council meetings will revert back to a 5:00 p.m. start time.

Beginning November 3, 2014, Council meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. This move was made to better accommodate the working public with the hopes that more citizens will be able to attend meetings.

Hydrant Flushing October 13 - 15, 2014

The City of Bessemer Department of Public Works will be flushing mains beginning October 13th and finishing on October 15th. The following schedule will apply:

October 13th – North of U.S. 2
October 14th – South of U.S. 2 EXCEPT – Yale Location, Colby Hill, Tilden and Palms
October 15th – Yale Location, Colby Hill, Tilden and Palms

Flushing may cause discoloration in your water. If discoloration occurs, please be sure to run your water until it clears before use.

Smithsonian Exhibit Set for April 4 to May 31, 2015

Community meetings are scheduled for August 13, 14 & 15 to discuss range participation in the the Smithsonian’s “The Way We Worked” exhibition hosted by Ironwood’s Downtown Art Place and scheduled for next spring. The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibits generally bring in thousands of new visitors to a region during the eight week run of the exhibition.

Range residents, business owners and communities are invited to learn how they can participate and celebrate their history and heritage by taking advantage of “The Way We Worked” exhibition provided by the Smithsonian and the State of Michigan.

The Downtown Art Place’s Smithsonian Team will host meetings in Bessemer, 6 p.m., August 13 at the Bessemer VFW; Hurley, 6 p.m. August 14 at Sharon’s Coffee Shop; and Wakefield, 6 p.m., August 15 at the Wakefield VFW.

The potential economic impact to the Gogebic Range, the opportunities for venues and businesses to take advantage of this opportunity and the benefits to the Range communities will be covered.

These are open meetings for everyone on the Gogebic Range interested in the Smithsonian exhibition, the wrap-around historical and cultural exhibits being developed on the Range and the business opportunities. Interested individuals and organizations are invited choose a convenient date and location to attend. Additional meetings will be scheduled in the near future.

The Smithsonian provides these exhibits to benefit small communities. These benefits include training opportunities, developing new partnerships and collaborations locally, statewide and nationally and strengthening fundraising efforts for this project and future endeavors. Also the Smithsonian exhibitions increase the visibility of venues and local exhibitors, attract more visitors to local communities and award recognition to local undertakings.

City Awarded $8.265 Million for Sewer Infrastructure Project

State Senator Debbie Stabenow informed city officials today that Bessemer was awarded $8.265 million for the sewer infrastructure project. The amount is divided into $5.265 million grant and $3 million poverty-level interest rate loan.

The project is tentatively scheduled for 2016.

The City Council will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, March 3, 2014 in the Council Chambers, City Hall, City of Bessemer, at 5:00 p.m., immediately following the regular Council Meeting, for the purpose of reviewing the Assessment Roll for 2014.

Property owners who believe they have been unjustly assessed may appear before the Board of Review beginning Wednesday, March 5, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and make a complaint against the assessment and be heard thereon. The March Board of Review will meet in the Council Chambers of the Bessemer City Hall, 411 S. Sophie Street, Bessemer, Michigan.

The City of Bessemer Board of Review will remain in session for at least three days successively during the above stated hours (Wednesday through Friday, March 5, 6, and 7).
